Welcome to Dhargyey Buddhist Centre
Welcome to the website of Dhargyey Buddhist Centre in Dunedin New Zealand . It contains current information on what is happening at The Centre. We also have a little mention of the various projects and offshoots of The Centre, such as Jam Tse Dhargyey Ling in Whangarei and other dharma institutions nationally, sponsoring refugee monks in India, the foundation caring for Dhargyey Rinpoche (who is The Venerable Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey's reincarnation), a profile of the personnel here and contacts for them, visiting the Portobello stupa, a little history of The Centre, and links to international Buddhist institutions.
New in 2009 is the webcasting of our teachings. The Classes page gives you access to viewing the classes live or listening to them later.
The Dhargyey Buddhist Centre in Dunedin is a charitable incorporated society founded in 1984 for the study and practise of Buddhism under the guidance of the senior Tibetan Lama, Gen Rinpoche, The Venerable Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey. To our great sadness he passed away in August 1995, since which The Venerable Jampa Thupten Tulku and The Venerable Jampa Khedrup Lhagon Tulku have assumed the role of spiritual guides. A commemorative stupa has been built for Gen Rinpoche and it was finished and consecrated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in September 1996.
There are now more centres associated with the DBC in New Zealand. In Whangarei, north of Auckland, there is the Jam Tse Dhargyey Ling. In Christchurch, in the middle of the South Island, there is the embryonic centre Thupten Shenphen Dhargyey Ling.
At the Dhargyey Buddhist Centre, regular meetings and classes are held at the Centres covering Buddhist philosophy, meditation and practice. All classes are free and open to the public. There is a shrine room for meditation and a small library of books on Buddhism, Tibet and related topics. The Centre is open whenever there are classes.
